Reasons for Subway's Magnificent Growth

By Maurice LaPorta

After all of the burger franchises have prospered as they have, who would have guessed that the next company to make it big would be a sandwich giant? Subway has thrived nationwide, and I'm going to give a glimpse into the situation to explain their success.

1. Healthy fast food = success. As more and more people become obese, there has been a growing interest in those looking to eat better. With cheeseburgers, pizza and fried chicken staring you down most everywhere else, a fresh sub from Subway looks great.

A major promoter of the Subway brand, and a huge boost to the company's image, has been Jared Fogel, the young man who decided to go on a diet that simply consisted of Subway sandwiches. He was hundreds of pounds overweight, and successfully lost this weight on his Subway diet.

2. Pricing. Another great idea Subway had was to introduce the 5 dollar footlong. As money becomes tighter and tighter, consumers didn't want to waste money on lunch that wasn't tasty and filling.

People love a good deal, and there's no doubt that Subway's $5 sandwiches are a great deal in this day and age. Even a meal at McDonald's can often cost more than a Subway 12-inch sub with chips. The competitive pricing has easily made Subway an attractive place to buy a lunch from during these hard economic times.

Subway has also been very strategic in planning its locations. Subway likes to keep its operations lean and mean, as most location will just have a few employees working there at once.

This saves the company a lot of money, allowing it to offer smaller locations, but at a higher volume.

Subway has shown no signs of slowing down in growth. Jared is still around, the prices haven't gone up and I just saw another new Subway today when I was driving. I guess it's time to go find five more dollars. - 31875
